Numark NS7 Review

It’s been just over 2 months since I bought my Numark NS7 and I thought it was about time to write a post letting you know my experiences with this device both good and bad. This may prove beneficial if you are planning on purchasing an all in one midi controller or just want to know how this one goes in the real world. :-)

I’m going to do my review in 2 parts to try to keep it as simple as possible. These parts are: Physical Construction, End User Compatibility / Software. So with that in your mind lets get started!!

Physical Construction
———————
I purchased the Numark NS 7 in April and it was delivered by Australia Post. I mention this because if you are an Australian resident ordering this hardware I advise getting it delivered by a courier company that offers good insurance on the product. I found Australia Post to be terrible in delivery of this quite expensive hardware. Appart from them splitting the consignment in 2 and me having to wait almost a week between receiving my first parcel and getting the final ones. Once I received the NS7 i found that the packaging had been quite badly damaged. A huge gouge had been taken out of one side of the box almost big enough for my fist to fit in.

With this in mind I tell you I’ve had absolutely no issues with the device since purchasing it. This in my mind is a great testament to it’s build quality. The whole device is quite heavy and very solid feeling. The faders and crossfader feel quite strong even though they are a plastic. All the control knobs (EQ, gain etc) are quite firm feeling I find quick “tweaks” really easy to do and generally don’t have issues with over turning the knob like I did with my Xponent. I find they have a little more give than on a DJM800 though.

All the connection points seem very sturdy and I’ve had no issues with connecting RCA or XLR cables and having them come loose or feel unstable once plugged in.

Whilst I’d never experienced using a vynal control method when DJing I’ve found the platters to be the responsive and easy to get used to. I’ve tried both the high and low torque settings and found I much prefer the high torque. I’ve found the little vynal record parts of the platter quite nice and the slip mats allow the whole platter to spin whilst i’ve got my hand on the record.

I will comment here that I find backspins to be an interesting experience. When I do a backspin at home they are quite short and I find I usually have to spin it twice to get it to last 4 beats. When I’m at a gig and performing live I don’t have this issue. I still haven’t worked out what’s different but I’m starting to think it’s just my level of excitement!! :-P

In regards to the built in laptop stand thing that comes with the NS I have found this to be good in some places and really BAD in others. In venues where there is a stage or a physically separate area (booth) for me to setup in I find having the laptop right and the front of the device quite cool as I don’t have to look away to the side to read the track list when choosing tracks. I do find that it is a big space eater though.

In venues where I’ve got no “barrier” between me and the dance floor I’ve found the positioning of the laptop to be quite precarious and have almost had it knocked off it’s stand a couple of times. This prompted me to change how i setup in these situations. I now use a standard music stand to hold the laptop to the right of the NS but behind a speaker or table. This way people having a good time won’t accidentally hit the laptop and cause damage or even worse stop the music!! I suggest if you purchase an NS you have a think about these possibilities and get yourself a music stand as well.

All in all physically the unit is great! It looks the part and people generally love to come have a look at it as it’s not the same kind of thing they are used to seeing. I find it a little hard to load in and out of my vehicle but that’s just because I’m not very strong. With roadcase I’d say it ways around 35Kg.

End User Compatibility / Software
——————————–
Now this is where things can get a little interesting!! First let me define what I mean by End User. I class an End User as a person who has no technical knowledge or background when it comes to using digital devices / computers. If you can support yourself on a PC and don’t have to rely on “your computer guy” to solve your problems then you are not what I call and End User.

With this in mind I’ll now discuss the software and ease of use for End Users. If you are an end user thinking of purchasing this equipment I advise the following: Buy a Mac NOT a PC to go with it. Regardless of your love of either type of computer your going to have less support issues using Serato Itch and the NS7 on a Mac than you are with a PC.

Now to my situation. I am an IT business developer and I’ve been building PC’s for over 15 years . I have no trouble with dealing with my own PC related issues. When I purchased the NS7 I got myself an ASUS N61Jv laptop running Windows 7 64 Bit. I won’t go into my actual setup on this laptop as it’s a post in itself. I do have to use a beta driver for 64 Bit Windows and I’ll be honest it took me 3 hours to get the driver installed and Serato detecting the NS7. It came down to installation order and a post on the Serato forums ended up helping me out. If your in this boat just keep trying until you get it right. :-)

Once I got the driver installed I can safely say it is truely a matter of plug in turn on and play. Latency issues are minimal in any extent.

I have found the “CUE” button to be less responsive than the quick que buttons though. This has led me to setting quick que points when I want to do rhythmic cue hits when dropping a track or using it as a sampler. I tend to only use the “Cue” to take the track back to my main que point rather than scrubbing with the platters.

I have had no issues with fader or cross fader lag. When I snap a fader down the sound is gone straight away and it doesn’t happen after the beat like on my Xponent.

In regards to Serato Itch. The software is great, it is simple to use and easy to understand. I do have a couple of gripes with it though in comparison to other DJ software on the market including Scratch Live. My biggest gripes are:

  • ->No VST Effect plug in support: Whilst there is a good amount of effects that come with Itch I do find that there are a couple that are lacking and a few I just don’t like the sound of. I would love the option to be able to choose to add extra effects as I please
  • ->No sampler: In Serato Scratch Live there’s one but in Itch there isn’t. I have an M-Audio trigger finger that I used to use to trigger samples and certain effects. This is not possible with Itch in it’s current version. I’m hoping this changes down the track.
  • ->Latency on the cue button

All in all I feel I’ve got a great setup that gives me the best of the vynal DJ world coupled with the best of the CD DJ world allowing an imaginative blend of all the techniques and drop styles.

All in all I’ve found this device to be quite sturdy and have had no problems with it when performing at gigs or playing long periods. The longest I’ve playe non stop at a gig is about 5 hours. I do get the occaisional laggy visual interface issues but this doesn’t stop the NS7 from controlling output and there are no sound issues. It seems to just be a graphical thing not related to software subsystems. Other than that I believe it’s a great device for anyone who wants to get into the Digital DJ world.
